About the Series
ARTEK : The Art of the Early Keyboard, Inc. is a New York State non-profit organization that exists to present historically-informed concerts of music and educational activities in order to stimulate interest in and develop appreciation for early music in our society.
For the past 25 years, ARTEK has produced a well-attended and critically acclaimed New York City season each year, typically attracting capacity audiences. The ARTEK ensemble's core performers include virtuoso singers and instrumentalists and a continuo band of harpsichord, lute, theorbo, guitar, harp and more. The ensemble tours internationally and has several well-received recordings.
ARTEK's major community service project is the weekly series entitled Midtown Concerts, which presents free concerts at 1:15pm each Wednesday from September through May at Immanuel Lutheran Church (122 East 88th Street at Lexington Avenue), with performances by ARTEK and many other early music performers from the New York metro area and beyond, ranging from emerging artists to established ensembles. Founded in 1998, Midtown Concerts has cultivated a flourishing audience averaging 120 people per week over the 11 years of its existence.
