Callisto Ascending
Amorous Arias and Duets

Soprano Katherine Dain and mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin will perform an Italian chamber cantata by Handel which includes music later repurposed for Messiah, as well as works of Cozzolani, Caccini and Purcell. With Jessica Powell, viola da gamba, and Jeffrey Grossman, harpsichord.

Callisto Ascending, formed in 2007, is devoted to the vibrant exploration of the familiar and the forgotten in chamber music repertoire for period instruments and voices. The group has given concerts and master classes at venues including the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the Times Center, and the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University. Callisto Ascending is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, and received funding in 2008 from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

Mollie Glazer, viola da gamba
Viol Solos and Duos

The program will include music for solo viola da gamba by Carl Friedrich Abel and Richard Sumarte. Mollie Glazer will also be joined by Lisa Terry to perform viola da gamba duos by Marin Marais, Matthew Locke and Sainte Colombe.

Mollie Glazer studied cello and viola da gamba at the New England Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory of The Netherlands.  She has performed throughout the U. S. and Europe and has recorded for five record labels.  Mollie plays early music to jazz and lives on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts with her husband and son.  Lisa Terry lives in New York. She performs as a member of the viol consort Parthenia and the Baroque ensemble Louis-Louis.  Both have been soloists at the Bethlehem Bach Festival.

NO CONCERT
(Cancelled)

We regret to announce that the concert by Duo Appassionata originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 at 1:15 p.m. has been CANCELLED due to circumstances beyond our control. St. Bartholomew's Church is being used for a large church event on this date. As always, we are very grateful to St. Bart's for providing us with the use of their church for Midtown Concerts, and we respect their need to use their facilities to support their missions and programs. The concert of Mozart fortepiano duets will be rescheduled at a later date, possibly in fall 2009. Our apologies to all!

Duo Nova Antigua
Festa Musica Italiana

This program of eighteenth-century Italian music includes the rarely-heard Neapolitan composers Barbella, Leone and Veracini. Duo Nova Antigua is Mary Cherney (baroque flute) and Dennis Cinelli (archlute and mandolino bresciano).

As the Duo Nova Antigua, musical partners Mary Cherney and Dennis Cinelli bring a freshness and spontaneity to their performances. Their programs include rarely-performed treasures played on unique instruments. With a repertoire for various flutes with guitar, lute or mandolino, the duo has been presented in recitals at colleges, universities and concert series throughout North America and Europe. Acclaimed for their stylish performances characterized by a range of subtle nuances, dramatic spontaneity and energetic improvisations, the Duo Nova Antigua specializes in music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Romantic and Contemporary eras. This repertory is played on a variety of period and modern instruments.
