ARTEK
French Baroque Cantatas

ARTEK tenor Philip Anderson, praised for his "voice of liquid warmth" and "easy stage presence," will present a program of French baroque cantatas including Andre Campra's Arion, accompanied by Gwendolyn Toth and the ARTEK ensemble.

ARTEK has earned a reputation for exciting, dramatic performances that combine compelling musical settings of beautiful poetry with infectious baroque dance rhythms. Founded by director Gwendolyn Toth in 1986, ARTEK features singers and instrumentalists in performances of music ranging from Monteverdi to Bach that are notable for their vitality and spirit. Recent highlights include acclaimed performances of ARTEK’s theater show I’ll Never See the Stars Again off-off-Broadway and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; a sell-out performance on the series Music Before 1800; standing-ovation performances at the Regensburg Tage Alter Musik Festival (Germany) in 1998 and 2003; and ARTEK’s debut performance in 2003 at the prestigious Boston Early Music Festival. ARTEK’s recordings of Monteverdi’s Orfeo and other early Italian repertoire have been widely praised. ARTEK toured from 1997 to 2002 with the Mark Morris Dance Group, visiting major venues in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada, as well as more than 50 of America’s premier theaters. ARTEK has also appeared in France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. In New York City ARTEK has appeared on First Night New York; as featured performers with the Bach-Schütz Society Conference; the Kaye Playhouse chamber music series; and on Gotham Early Music Scene's inaugural showcase at the Times Center. In 2001 the Clarion Music Society awarded Gwendolyn Toth the Newell Jenkins Prize for excellence in early music performance, in recognition of her work with ARTEK.

Charites
"Et in Arcadia Ego"

Escape modern-day Manhattan for a moment and step into pastoral Arcadia. The vocal trio Charites (Brooke Bryant, Brett Umlauf and Amber Youell-Fingleton) combines baroque music, gesture and poetry to evoke that idyllic world where nymphs and shepherds reigned supreme. With Louise Chernosky, harpsichord.

Charites is a female trio committed to performing the music of Baroque composers and poets staged with period gesture. Charites is the Greek term for “Graces,” referring to the three mythological daughters of Zeus and Eurynome. The Graces govern traits such as charm, beauty, and creativity, all of which the group aims to transmit through its performances. The members of the group are equally invested in scholarship and performance and seek to blur the lines between these two arenas. Founded in 2006, Charites has thrilled audiences at venues like the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, St. Bartholemew's Church, Columbia University, and the CUNY Graduate Center.
